Martha Jane Hart is born in Camden Ohio to Ralph Hart and Nellie Hart. She was raised during the Depression on a small farm in Ohio, where she learned the value of hard work and stretching a penny.

Graduates from high school in Camden Ohio.
May 1940
Graduates from Ohio State University with a B.A. in Music Education. She met her beloved companion and husband of 71 years, Jay O. Newlon, Jr.
September 1, 1940
After graduation, Martha and Jay were married in 1940 in a very small ceremony in New York City, with Jay’s landlord bringing the flowers and serving as a witness.
1942
After Pearl Harbor, Jay enlisted in the Navy and Martha followed him from coast to coast so she could meet him when his battleship came into port. This required decoding messages hidden in his letters home, as information on ship movements was taken out of correspondence by military censors. Martha was a good decoder, resulting in their first two children being born during World War II.

First son, Daniel Hart Newlon, is born in Bremerton, Washington Naval Hospital.
July 3, 1945
First daughter, Nancy Alice Newlon, is born in Cincinnati, Ohio
November 1945
Jay is discharged from Navy.
January 6, 1949
Second daughter, Penelope Faith Newlon, is born in Dayton Ohio where Jay is working as an IRS agent.
1950
Jay takes a job with duPont de Nemours in Wilmington, Delaware. The family moves to Delaware from Ohio.
September 8, 1952
Second son, Thomas Arthur Newlon, is born at home in Fairfax development in Wilmington Delaware.
February 16, 1955
Third son, Christopher Andrew Newlon, is born at home in Fairfax development in Wilmington, Delaware.
December 3, 1956
Fourth son, Timothy Scott Newlon, is born at home in Wilmington Delaware.
September 2010
Jay and Martha celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary.
December 2011
Completed his 41st semester as an instructor at the University of Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning. Martha taught yoga and started the band.
January 3, 2012
Jay passes away in Greenville, Delaware.
November 2012
Martha moved to the Fountains in Sarasota, Florida. She brought her enthusiam for the transformative effects of music to the Fountains and started a drum circle.

Martha passes away in Sarasota, Florida surrounded by family. Each of her children had a chance to say their goodbyes by Skype or phone during the day (from Turkey, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Arlington). Right before her passing,her son, Tom, played his banjo and sang "Keep on the sunny side of life" over the phone. She seemed like she was singing along with him, more animated than she had been all day. After Tom stopped, she took just a couple of more breaths and died quickly and peacefully. She died surrounded by those she loved with music in her heart and mind.
